OBITUARY Iron River Reporter July 21 1993 “Obituaries: Norman Nelson” with photo
NORTHBROOK, Ill.-Norman W. Nelson, 78, retired assistant director of Chicago’s Field Museum of Natural History, died July 8 of heart and kidney failure at Covenant Retirement Community’s Brandel Center in Northbrook, Ill. He had been a resident of the Northbrook retirement community for three years.
He was assistant director of the world-famous museum from 1965 until his retirement in 1979. Prior to the museum, he was employed for 27 years at the Cherry-Burrell Corp., a manufacturer of dairy processing equipment headquartered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The son of Swedish immigrants, Nelson was born in Stambaugh on Oct. 23, 1914. His father Charles Nelson, an iron miner, became Stambaugh’s long-time city manager. The city manager donated the land for the town’s athletic field, today known as Nelson Field. Nelson was a 1932 graduate of Stambaugh High School, a 1935 graduate from North Park (Junior) College and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Northwestern University in 1937. A life-long member of the Evangelical Covenant Church of America, he was active in churches in Stambaugh, Glen Ellyn and Cedar Rapids. Nelson served in various capacities from Sunday school teacher, deacon, trustee, choir member, choir director and band leader to national board member.
He enjoyed both sports and music. He played football in high school and college and continued with handball, golf, skiing and tennis until recently. He played the trombone and enjoyed both classical and band music.
Nelson married Reseda Matson of Ashtabula, Ohio on June 15, 1940. He is survived by his wife of 53 years; a brother Carl Nelson of Glen Ellyn, Ill.; three sons, Bruce A. Nelson of Wilmette, Ill., Charles A. Nelson of Naperville, Ill. and Lowell A. Nelson of Park Ridge, Ill.; and three granddaughters.
A memorial service was held July 11 at North Park Covenant Church, Chicago.
