James B. MacGregor, was born and raised in Kirriemuir, Angus, Scotland. He served with the Black Watch as a boy (i.e., water carrier) in South Africa during the Boer War. Shortly after the turn of the century, in 1906, he and a friend by the name of Campbell, emigrated with the intended destination of Hawaii. Campbell continued his journey, but James changed his mind and stayed in the United States. He built a practice as a Physiotherapist.

James changed the spelling of his name from McGregor to MacGregor to preclude identification with the Irish, playing on the common and mistaken notion that the Irish spelled their "Mac" names "Mc". He changed his name to be marketable. In those days one encountered signs "Irish not wanted", Irish need not apply" and "No pets or Irish". He became a US citizen in 1917.

At sometime he learned the occupation of physiotherapist. According to his business cards he had offices at two locations:
1. First office at: 221 Spondly Buildings, 639 Diversey Parkway, Chicago, Illinois
2. Second office at: Suite 1619 Mallers Building, 5 South Wabash Avenue, Chicago, Illinois - Tel: Franklin 8279

James married a German woman. It is not certain if she was born in the US or in Germany. His first wife was Bertha Roessner. Roessner may have been her maiden name or may have been a later married name. James met Bertha and her daughter, Bernice, on Chicago's south side during the war years. According to family lore, he later paid for Bertha to attend law school. James and Bertha had no children together. It is uncertain whether or not the following Web site - http://www.smccain.com/genealogy/WC01/WC01_215.htm - pertains to her or to someone else. The dates would jive.

At some time between 1917 and the early 1930s James and Bertha divorced. He had become a wealthy man and lost all at the crash of 1929. He later married Marjorie Anne McGrath on July 14, 1934, at Waukegan, Illinois.

On November 27, 1939 James and Marjorie had a son, James B. MacGregor, in Chicago, Illinois. Shortly thereafter the family moved to Florida and later (1943) again to New York City. James found employment as a physiotherapist. In 1951 he moved to Denver where he stayed a few months and then returned home. In 1953 he had a disagreement with his boss who wanted him to retire. James did not retire, but quit instead and moved to San Francisco where he got a job as a physiotherapist at higher wages. He corresponded with his son.

James died on November 17, 1961, in Arapahoe County, Colorado USA. His first wife, Bertha made the funeral arrangements and welcomed his wife and son in her home until after the burial at Fairmount Cemetery, 430 South Quebec Street, Denver, Colorado 80231. The headstone reads: "James Bruce MacGregor, Aug. 17, 1882 – Nov. 17, 1961, In my Father's house are many mansions". The grave is located in Section 6, Lot 2, Block 36).
