Dr. Wm. Y. Cosper Answers Last Call

Dr. William Yelda [sic] Cosper, one of the best known residents of the Colony and Swartz neighborhoods, where he has resided for the past half a century, died at his home near Swartz at 7:30 o'clock Wednesday evening. He had been in impaired health for some time and his death, while not unexpected by those familiar with his condition, was nevertheless a shock to a large circle of friends in Monroe and throughout the parish.
Deceased was a native of Alabama, having been born in Taladega county February 14, 1844. He came to Louisiana in 1870 and settled in Ward 2 of this parish where he followed the practice of his profession and had agricultural interests. he was a Confederate Veteran and for a time was affiliated with Henry W. Allen Camp No. 182, but later withdrew his membership. [NOTE: Service records show W.Y. Cosper served as a private in Company I of the 18th AL Infantry.]
He is survived by two granddaughters, only children of his daughter, Mrs. Hazel Cosper Sweeney, deceased. Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock this afternon, burial being in the Cosper Cemetery in Ward 2, a number friends from Monroe attending.

NOTE: His Granddaughter, Anna Gray Sweeney Noe, had his body, and those of his wife and several other family members removed from Cosper Cemetery and reburied in a vault at Mulhearn Cemetery.
