Jonathan Dodge was born in Lamoille County VT,

After a stay in Illinois he left for C.A. with his boyhood friend J.H.Cole on Christmas Day, 1849.

They journeyed to the American River 6 miles from Colma where gold was first discovered.After meeting with little success in the gold mines he traveled to San Joaquin Co.

in which he bought land in his name. A large tract near the Calaveras River.

Mr. Dodge married on Nov. 8,1959 Miss Emily Bray of England.
He culvated grain, stockraising and known for the thorough-bred horses, cattle and sheep.

He also purshased land in Merced County a ranch of several thousand acres.Mr. Dodge became interested in grape culture and planted large vineyards of imported grapes.

The Demise of a Well-Known Farmer

Something About the Life-History of One of San Joaquin's Pioneer Tillers of the Soil

Jonathan H Dodge, a well known farmer of the county, died at his home in Stockton last night of old age.

The deceased was born in Lamoille county, Vermont, on April 21, 1819. In early life be removed to McHenry county, Illinois, whence he came to California in 1849 by way of Panama. Arriving here he went to mining on the South Fork of the American river at a point six miles above the place where gold was first discovered, but remained there only a few months. From that locality he came to this county and settled on land in Elliott township. The deceased had resided continuously here from time on.
