Nora Marguaritte Dorothea Hargens was born to Louis and Olga S. (Grohman) Hargens Oct. 9, 1924. She was second oldest of six children. Nora enjoyed gardening, sewing, helping her husband Kenneth with the field work, visiting with friends, and loved her family. She attended country school near Alexandria/Fulton. When she was 17, she enrolled in N.Y.A school to learn how to operate a lathe. In 1942, she joined her oldest sister Louise and brother Eli in Benton, Washington to work at Bowing. She worked there until the end of the war. In 1972, Nora obtained her high school diploma by attending school through the mail.

When Nora returned to South Dakota, she became a nanny near Hurley, SD where she met Kenneth Waltner. They were married March 5, 1947. They lived with Kenneth’s parents until spring of 1948 and then moved to a farm northwest of Marion, SD where they lived until 1951. They continued to farm in the Marion and Turkey Ridge area until they settled onto the home place near Turkey Ridge. Kenneth and Nora were married for 56 years before Kenneth’s passing in 2003. Nora was baptized in the Lutheran faith when she was an infant. Upon her marriage to Kenneth, she then joined the Salem Mennonite Church near Freeman, SD. Two children were born to Kenneth and Nora: Gary Lee and Karen Rae. They spent a lot of good times with their family on the farm. Nora especially liked sharing her gardening skills with her children and grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were her husband Kenneth; son Gary; her father and mother, her sister Louise and her three brothers Eli, Alfred, and Christian Hargens. She is survived by daughter Karen (Wayne) Kaufman of Delmont SD; sister Lucille King of Marion SD; grandchildren Brett Kaufman of Delmont SD, Rebecca (DeWayne) Davis of Elizabeth City, NC, and Christa (Jordan) Helma of Freeman, SD; and great grandchildren Shannon and Collin Helma of Freeman, SD; sister-in-laws Lilas Waltner of El Centro, CA, Ione Tieszen of Freeman, SD; and many nephews and nieces.
