Samuel Bowman is my 2nd great-grandfather.
Samuel died of Typhoid Fever in Hammond Hospital. Pt. Lookout may have been part of Virginia at the time of Samuel's death. My half-sister had a love letter to his wife, dictated by Samuel to his doctor just before his death.
The remains of 600+ Union dead were moved to Arlington Cemetery, now known as Arlington National Cemetery, in 1868. I have a copy of a letter from St. Mary's Historical Society with documentation containing Samuel Bowman's name.
Section 13, Grave 13032. According to Benjamin Davis, Historian for Arlington Nat'l Cemetery in a letter to Roy Fisher dated 19OCT1978, the only remains indentified as Samuel Bowman have a death date of 24DEC1864 and were with a different regiment. The remains of a Pvt. Shadrack Bowman, Co. D, 95th Pa Inf with a date of death of 19SEP1863 are interred in Sectin 13, Grave 13032. A check by Mr. Davis with the Veterans Administration brought out the fact that a Pvt. Shadrack Bowman, same company, same regiment, same date of death is buried in Philadelphia National Cemetery. Mr. Davis believes the Arlington grave to contain the remains of Samuel Bowman.
Samuel Bowman never went under the name of Shadrack Bowman. They were two different people.
