Alice Emily (Bentz) Berven, age 88,

of Forest Lake

Born in Dickinson, ND, October 21, 1917. Spent her first years on her mother's homestead ranch in North Dakota and grew up in Nekoosa, Wisconsin. Received her BA in English Education from Stevens Point Teacher's College and a Masters in education from the U of M.

While teaching high school in Janesville, WI she conducted their orchestra. She continued her teaching career teaching English and composition at Forest Lake H.S. from 1962 - 1968 and Stillwater H.S. from 1968-1980. She developed the first humanities curriculum at Stillwater H.S. Alice was beloved by students and was gratified to hear from many of them from college and later in life thanking her for her inspiration and rigor. A frequent critique seen on student essays was "fuzzy thinking!"



She developed CanSurmount, Abbott NW Hospital's volunteer cancer counseling service, and served as its director from 1981-1995. She was the choir director at St. Peters Catholic Church from 1955-1962 and also served on the Board of the Forest Lake Library for many years.



She loved literature, theater, music and of the humanities.

The Berven family wants to thank the many caregivers who gave her their love as they tended to her needs. The family also thanks neighbors and friends who enriched her life.



She is survived by her husband, N. Eugene; sisters, Margaret Helke, Kathryn Nelligan, Mary Gaber; brother, Donald Bentz; children, Matthew (Judy) Berven, Peter (Nancy) Berven, Mary (Kent) Karlsson, Kathy (Barbara Hamilton) Berven, and Steve (Shelley) Berven; grandchildren, Sonja (Jae) Berven Chong, Mark, Leigh, Eliot and Olivia Berven, Krister and John Karlsson; and great grandson, Kaeden Berven Chong.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am, Friday, September 29, 2006 at St. Peters Catholic Church, 1250 South Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Gathering will be from 5-8pm, Thursday, September 28, 2006 at Mattson Funeral Home, 343 North Shore Drive, Forest Lake. Interment at Calvary Cemetery in Forest Lake.
