Roy Donald Clark was born Oct. 24, 1927 in Tulsa, Okla., to Noah Finis and Melissa Ella (Foster) Clark. He was the youngest of eight children, having three brothers and four sister.
Roy grew up and attended school at Thayer, Mo.
In January of 1946 he joined the U.S. Army, and was honorably discharged from his medical detachment unit in September of 1947. After his tour of duty in Korea he returned to Thayer and completed his final year of high school, graduating in May of 1948.
Following graduation, Roy struck out on his own and was hired by a wheat harvest crew that was working in Kansas and Colorado. He was then hired by a construction company and helped pour curd and gutter in Atwood, Kansas, and assisted in the construction of the elevator on the west side of Burlington. Whileworking in Eastsern colorado he met his future wife, Lola Elaine Knapp. Roy and Lola were married June 3, 1951, at the Methodist Church in Burlington.
The couple moved to the Denver area where Roy worked at several jobs before gaining full-time employment at Continental Can Co. After approximately 25 years, he retired from the can company, and in 1982 he and Lola returned to the Burlington area to live.
He loved to hunt and fish, and was an avid reader all his life. He particulary enjoyed reading western novels.
Roy and Lola enjoyed nearly 44 years of marriage before Lola passed away on May 11, 1995.
Roy departed this life after a battle with cancer on Wednesday, March 6, 2002, at Kit Carson County Memorial Hospital in Burlington.
Left to mourn his passing are his brother Noah Clark and wife Opal of Weogufka, Ala., mother-in-law violet Knapp of Burlington; sister-in-law Mary Clark of Yellville, Ark.; five nephews and four nieces; special friend Randy Boden; and many other friends and relatives.
Preceding him in death were his wife Lola; his parents; brothers Art Clark and Bill Clark; sisters Agnes Shepard, Opal Smith, Ruby Clark and Mary Clark; brothers-in-law Orvis Shepard adn Charles Smith; Sister-in-law Irene Clark; and father-in-law Don Knapp.
Services were held Monday, March 11, 2002, at Love Funeral Home in Burlington at 10:30 a.m. Pastor dr. Ralph Datema of St. John United Church of Christ officiated at the service.
Robin Sneddon played the organ for the congregational song "On the Old Rugged Cross", and musicians Dan steerman, Terry Souther, E.J. Carpenter and Stan Pratt sang "On the Wings of a Dove" and "Walk the Way the Wind Blows."
Casket bearers were Randy Boden, Mark Lengel, Paul Peters, Jim Pfeiler, Darrell Shanks and Keith Weyerman.
Honoray pallbearers were Oscar Cousins, Elmer Ebler, Virgil Lundvall, Dewey Owens, Ralph Rogers, Clark Rolow and Lere Lee Senti.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery in Burlington.
