He was the son of Benjamin W., Jr. and Elizabeth F.(Watson)Stephens and husband of Julia C. Savage. Their children: Julia H., Virgil, George F., Martin L., and Ella. George W. joined the Confederate army during the Civil War. He went from private to captain and was practically a pauper when returning from war. At the time of his death, he was one of the wealthest man in this section. He was a believer in the Church of Christ.
