Mrs. Sophia Pierce, a lady widely known in this locality, died May 10th. She was of the old Puritan stock, the first of the line from which she was descended coming to American in 1630. She was born in Springfield, Mass., and married to Lester Belden before coming to this state. Some years after Mr. Belden's death she was married to Col. Judah Pierce, about thirty-five years ago. She was left a widow the second time in 1874. Her daughter, Miss Ellen Belden, took care of her through her long illness and deserves praise therefor. The funeral was held at the family residence at 10:30 A.M., May 12th. Rev. W.B. Clark preached the funeral sermon, which was an excellent one. Quite a large number of relatives and friends, unable to attend here, met the others at the cemetery in Cortland.
