STANBERRY, MO: Martena Cecilia Swinford, 97, passed away September 6, 2014 at Pineview Manor, Stanberry, MO.
She was born March 27, 1917 in Clyde, MO, the daughter of Martin and Josephine (Kimmett) Jensen.
On September 11, 1937 she married Marvin Swinford in Clyde, MO. He preceded her in death on December 12, 1972. She was also preceded by her parents; son, Darrel Swinford; Grandson, Robbie Alldredge; granddaughter, Joy Floyd; 3 brothers, Pat, Marvin Jensen and Martin, Jr.; sister, Margaretha Talmadge; sister-in-law, Dorothy Jensen; and 3 brothers-in-law, William Schwebach, Sylvester Strueby, and Howard Talmadge.
Martena retired as a social worker from the Social Services office in Albany, MO. She was a member of the St. Peter’s Catholic Church, St. Ann Alter Society, and the West Sager Community Club. In 2004 she was voted Mrs. Stanberry by the community in which she made her home.
Martena was a very gracious, humble, kind and loving lady. She was a woman of great faith, enjoying her family immensely and life’s simple pleasures. All her family declared her as “amazing” and held her in very high esteem as Mother, Mom or MaMa. She busied herself with a daily purpose, perhaps with her hobbies such as making pot holders, crocheting, and her famous sought after “scrubbies” to share with others.
Survivors include her children and their spouses, Arda (Martin) Kerwin, Ravenwood, MO, Marilyn (Bob) Alldredge, Fairfax, MO, James (Sandy) Swinford, Kearney, MO, and Kenneth (Susy) Swinford, Stanberry, MO; Daughter-in-law, Eva Herl, Holt, MO; 3 Sisters, Marie Schwebach, Maryville, MO, Madonna Strueby, Guilford, MO, and Marcella O’Bannon, Denver, CO; 2 sisters-in-law, Gertrude and Theresa Jensen, both of Stanberry, MO; 15 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, at St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Stanberry, MO. Burial will follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Stanberry, MO. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 Tuesday, with a Rosary prayed at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the St. Peter’s Catholic Church, Stanberry, MO. Memorials may be made to St. Peter’s Catholic Church, in care of Roberson Funeral Home, P.O. Box 153, Stanberry, MO 64489.
