BASIL LEWIS COMMONS "Buz" June 3, 1925 ~ August 28, 2014 Major Basil Lewis "Buz" Commons, USAF (Ret.) 89, of Reston, Virginia, passed away peacefully on August 28, 2014 surrounded by his family. Basil was born in Hopkins, Michigan on June 3, 1925, the eldest child of the late Harry and Irene (Beck) Commons. Major Commons joined the Army Air Corps at the age of 18 on 10 September 1943 where he earned his pilot wings in 1945. An honored WWII veteran, Major Commons served with distinction in the United States Air Force for 20 years. Major Commons was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as Mission Commander for the daring Eighth Air Force Arctic Rescue Operations Mission, in November 1958, saving the lives of 20 scientists and airmen stranded on shattered Ice Floe Alpha, in the Arctic Ocean. Major Commons retired from the United States Air Force in 1963 and relocated his family to the Washington, DC area where he enjoyed successful careers in real estate and private business. "Buz" as Major Basil L. Commons was lovingly known to all, is survived by his dear wife of 62 years, Frances Nell (Wilder); five children, Susan D. Commons Goble (Jim), Major General David L. Commons. USAF (Ret.) (Barbara), Carla Commons, John B. Commons (Christin) and Norma Commons Ramsey (Russ); as well as sisters, Hazel (Hank), Norma and Gayle (Lawrence); a brother, Dennis (Lois); and sisters-in-law, Beverly, Joyce and Beverly. He also leaves behind seven adoring grandchildren, Chris, Michael, Bailey, Eric, Mark, Grayson and Paige; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers, Max, Robert and Paul. Arrangements are pending for memorial service and interment with Full Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery.
