Rachel Painter, a daughter of Sarah (née Haines) and Isaac Painter, senior, was born in the vicinity of Nineveh, then in Frederick County, Virginia. Quaker records show her parents, siblings, and date of birth.

Rachel Painter and Samuel Jewell were married on 31 December 1798 in Frederick County. The couple had nine children, seven of whom lived to maturity and were named in Samuel Jewell's 1847 will—
• John Painter Jewell (1800-1860)
• Elizabeth Jewell Brookbank (1802-1850/60)
• Sarah Jewell Martin (1803-1879)
• Mary Jewell Woodsmall (1805-1886)
• Margaret Jewell Calvert (1807-after 1870)
• Samuel Jewell (died in infancy)
• William Painter Jewell (1812-1890)
• Ruth Jewell (predeceased father)
• Isaac Painter Jewell (1815-after 1860)
Census records indicate that the two eldest children were born in Virginia; the younger children in Ohio.

The six eldest children were married in Kentucky: John in 1820 in Bullitt County; Elizabeth in 1825, Sarah and Mary in 1828, and Margaret in 1834 in Spencer County (which was formed in 1824 in part from Bullitt County); William in 1835 in adjacent Shelby County. Samuel Jewell's household was enumerated in 1830 in Spencer County, Kentucky

Rachel Jewell died on 19 November 1834 in Indiana.* There is no record of her burial.

Samuel Jewell remarried in 1837 in Owen County, Indiana.

The Crooked Run Meeting was in Nineveh, then in Frederick County, Virginia. Nineveh became part of Warren County, when that county was created in 1836.

The Crooked Run Monthly Meeting recorded on 29 April 1786: "The [women] friends that was appointed to visit Isaac Painter's [six] Children namely Bulah, Rachel, Rebeckah, Isaac, Abraham & Mahlon report that it is comply'd with & that they thought it is best for them to be reciev'd as members therefore this meeting unites with men friends in receiving them." (Womens Meeting Minutes of the Crooked Run Monthly Meeting, 1782-1789 (manuscript), p. 32.)
