John was born on May 22, 1936 in Olney, Illinois, a son of the late Richard and Kathryn (Quinn) Conley. He and Barbara Lapington were united in marriage on June 17, 1961 in Flora, Illinois and they have shared and celebrated 53 years of marriage and friendship. In addition to his loving wife Barbara, John is survived by their daughter, Julie Cutright and husband Jerry of Charleston; their son, John Stuart “Stu” Conley and wife Sara of Fayetteville, North Carolina; three grandchildren, Katie and Riley Cutright of Charleston and Emma Conley of Fayetteville; a sister, Lora Kay Harvey and husband Mick of Cookeville, Tennessee; a brother, Richard Conley of Maryville, Illinois; his father-in-law, Irby Lapington of Henderson, Kentucky; four brothers-in-law and four sisters-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his mother-in-law, Lucille Lapington; two sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law.
John was a graduate of Flora High School and continued his schooling at Eastern Illinois University where he received both his Bachelors and Masters Degrees. He was employed as a teacher and coach in the Altamont, Illinois School District, was a principal in Oakland, Illinois, and an Elementary School Superintendent in Casey, Illinois before accepting a position in 1972 with his alma mater, Eastern Illinois University. He served E.I.U. as registrar until his retirement in 1996 and was a member of the Illinois Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (IACRAO).
John was an avid golfer and a longtime member of the Charleston Country Club. He was among those fortunate enough to attain every golfer’s dream of shooting a hole-in-one. He was an outdoor sportsman who enjoyed fishing and hunting as well as an athlete and sports enthusiast. He was known to be a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals fan! John and Barbara enjoyed traveling together and spent 12 memorable winters enjoying the warmth and sunshine of the Alabama Gulf Coast and Myrtle Beach. John was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, a faithful friend to many, and a man whose life exemplified the characteristics of a true gentleman. He will always be lovingly remembered for these admirable qualities.
