Thomas was born in Co. Sligo, Ireland, deliberately so, as his father William had a great sentimental attachment to his native land and wished that all of his otherwise American children be born there. He returned to Ireland with his parents at least once, for the birth of his sister Bridget Tess.

When he was old enough to work, Thomas first took a job as a wire drawer at Washburn and Moen at 94 Grove St., Worcester.

He married Annie Keaney on Valentine's Day, 1889.

With a house full of eight children plus renters on the second floor, Thomas was no stranger to stress. While some men chose to drink and carouse, his solution was to leave the house and take a walk, returning a little while later when everything had calmed down.

Thomas made a living as a house painter in Worcester. His undoing was getting injured in a fall from the scaffolding set against a house he was painting. He was taken to a doctor who pronounced him fit to go home, and died that night from internal bleeding. He was 57.
