Rocco J. Ruggiero, of Brewster, MA (formerly of Plymouth and Newton), passed away on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at the age of 88. Born and raised in Newton, Rocco was a graduate of Newton High School. He was a resident of Brewster for 10 years, Plymouth for 16 years, and Newton for 60-plus years.

Loving husband of the late Marjorie (Hannon) Ruggiero for 62 years. Beloved and devoted father of Lea Kagel and her husband, Phillip, of Danville, CA; Anne Gilmore and the late Ted, of Brewster; Joseph Ruggiero and his wife Kathy, of South Jordan, UT; and Pamela Connolly and her husband James, of Plymouth. Grandfather of Amy and David Kagel and Ashley (Kagel) Gustafson of California; Amy (Gilmore) Faustino of Wayland; Jennifer (Ruggiero) Boss, Rocco and Andrew Ruggiero of Utah. Great grandfather of Grace, Rocco, and Evelyn Faustino, Elizabeth Kagel; Arrie, Brielle, and Emmaline Boss; Greta and Rachel Gustafson; Joseph Ruggiero; Son of the late Giuseppe and Antonietta (Gargaro) Ruggiero.

Rocco served in WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945. He flew 25 missions as a ball-turret gunner in B-17 and B-24 aircraft. On his final mission, the plane was shot down and he was one of the few members to survive. He was captured by the Germans, but escaped and was interned in Switzerland for the duration of the war.

Rocco worked as a machinist at Draper Laboratory (formerly M.I.T. Instrumentation Laboratory) from 1960 to his retirement in 1988. He worked mostly on the Deep Sea Rescue Vehicle (DSRV) program. He especially enjoyed working during the time of the Apollo lunar missions.

Rocco enjoyed building and fixing clocks and was an avid fan of yard sales and auctions, always looking for a great "find". He was a member of the Swiss Internees Association, the Garibaldi Club in Plymouth, and was a long time member of the Newton Elks, B.P.O.E., 1327.
