Rickie the son of Helen Gunderson of Virginia Minnesota and Norman B. Gunderson who predeceased his son, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on May 7 1968 in Minneapolis MN. He arrived in Vietnam on November 27 where he was assigned to and served with Company L, 3d Battalion, 26th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

Upon the completion of Operations "BOLD MARINER/RUSSELL BEACH" on February 10 the BLT began to participate on Operation TAYLOR COMMON in the Arizona Territory of Quang Nam Province.

On February 18, during a search and clear operation near the Phu Bac (2) hamlet in Duc Duc District the Marines were hit with rifle, and RPG fire one man was killed and another one wounded. One of the casualties was PFC Gunderson who was evacuated to the USNH hospital ship USS Sanctuary where he died the following day from the multiple fragmentation wounds he had sustained.
