Mrs. Thornton was born April 9, 1955, in Grundy, Va., daughter of the late Jeff and Willie Charles Yates.
She was a nurse's aide in Corsica Hills Nursing Home, Centreville, and in Heron Point, Chestertown.
Mrs. Thornton loved being outdoors, especially biking and walking in the woods. She also loved to sing and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Evans Yates.
She is survived by her husband, David Thornton; a son, Charles Ford III of Easton; a daughter, Victoria Thomas of Barclay; five grandchildren, including Debra Ford of Barclay, whom she raised; four brothers, Johnny Yates and Danny Yates, both of Elkton, Jeff Yates of Elk Mills, and David Yates of Chesapeake City; and three sisters, Brenda Conover of Warwick, Nell McCoin of Elkton, and Della Crook of Sudlersville.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Hicks Home for Funerals, 103 W. Stockton St., Elkton, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Burial will be in Gilpin Manor Memorial Park, Elkton.
