Mrs. James W. Townsend Passes
The news of the death of Mrs. James W. Townsend at her home in Los Angeles, Calif., Monday morning, will be received in Fort Benton and Chouteau county with genuine regret by hundreds of our residents who were numbered among her friends. Mrs. Townsend passed away following an extended illness.
The Townsend family were among the well-known and highly respected families of this city from 1897 until about 1915, when they removed to Great Falls, where they resided until 1932 when they moved to California. Mrs. Townsend, whose maiden name was Nora Berry, was born in Fulton, Missouri. She came to Montana with her parents in 1880 and located at Highwood. The family then moved to Butte and Miss Berry was married to James Townsend in this city, Feb. 18, 1897. Mr. Townsend during his residence in this county was engaged in the cattle business and was foreman for the old Circle outfit for a number of years and then went into business for himself, having a ranch on the Marias river. Mrs. Townsend was a Past Worthy Matron of the Eastern Star and was the first woman member of the Fort Benton school board. She had a charming personality and made friends with all of whom she came in contact.
Mrs. Townsend is survived by her husband, James Townsend, of Los Angeles; five daughters, Miss Martha, Great Falls, Natalie, Clarabelle, Marion, and Virginia, all of Los Angeles; and the son, J. Harding Townsend, lives in Spokane.
Funeral services were to be held in Los Angeles on Wednesday afternoon and burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery.
