Marvin De Sousa was born in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Chicago policemen John De Sousa and Carrie Walsh. Marvin was able to see Europe in his early teens when he accompanied his singer/actress sister, May De Sousa, to Europe in 1907 and 1913. On 30 October 1915, Marvin married Mary Veronica Clark (1892-1982); the couple had two children, Eleanor and John De Sousa. Marvin was described as a "battery man", specializing in automobile batteries. He was also a talented singer. The couple lived for a time in Muskegon, Michigan, before returning to Chicago. He was buried in the same plot as his father and sister.
