Revolutionary War soldier.
He owned land adjoining William Andrews, cited by some researchers as the father of Nancy Andrews who married his son Capt. John Floyd (III). Other researchers show her father (incorrectly) as Abraham Andrews.

Several family trees show him as a son of John Floyd and wife Michal Harris, though more recent research shows Michal Harris was the wife of Edward Floyd. Other family trees show his parents as John Floyd and Anne Teackle, his grandparents as William Floyd and Esther Kendall Floyd, Thomas Teackle IV and Catherine Stockley Teackle. Some family trees show John Floyd (who married Anne Teackle) as being named John Kendall Floyd, his middle being his mother's maiden name. This may or may not be correct.

Mary Fay Campbell Schertz wrote a letter dated January 14, 1973 which she signed as Mary Woermley, 955 East Parkman St., Altadena, CA 911001. She was discussing Floyd and Andrews lineages given in two books: Early Floyds of Pike Co., Alabama & Some of their Descendants by James P. Floyd and Hugh L. Taylor, and GENEALOGY OF THE ANDREWS-MAXEY & RELATED FAMILIES OF HENRICO COUNTY IN COLONIAL VIRGINIA (1965, 1971) by James Ray Andrews, Sr. A distant cousin wrote that Mary's divorce became final about this time and she resumed the name Schertz, the name of her first husband and her children. At one time there was a copy of this book at the Alabama State Archives in Montgomery, AL., possibly now at Samford University Library, Birmingham.

Mary recited the Andrews lineage from these sources as:
Thomas Andrews b. 1663 England, landed 27 January 1685 in Virginia on the ship "Richard & Elizabeth Joe," died 1731-37 Henrico Co, VA.
His son Richard Andrews b. c1690 VA or England, m. Mary (Isham?) and d. c1752 Bristol Parish, Lunenburg (now Mecklenburg), VA.
Their son William Andrews b. 13 May 1726 Henrico Co., VA. (Lunenberg?) d. 1771/2 Mecklenburg Co, VA., married Ann (Rowland? or Varney?), and had:
Ann Nancy Andrews who m. Capt. John Floyd III and moved to Newberry Co., S.C.

Descendants of John and Nancy Floyd by Mary Fay Campbell Schertz (1973):
Captain John Floyd's parents were John Floyd and Ann Hurst, and Ann Hurst was a daughter of John Hurst (who died in 1789) and his first wife Elizabeth Summers. Miss Mattie Lee Cooley wrote that the Hurst plantation had a landing on the Potomac River, five miles from Mt, Vernon.
John Spearman Floyd (Capt. John Floyd's grandson) wrote: "Tradition, as I have it from Uncle Wash and Buck Satterwhite says that Capt. John Floyd's father emigrated to this country from England, to Maryland, that he courted a young lady in England, whose parents objected to the marriage. On that account, he stole and married her and they came to America. This may be just a romantic notion, as genealogists will tell you that such a tradition exists in almost every family."

Mrs. Etha Hames Ellerbe (1880-1921), great-great-granddaughter of Captain John Floyd, gave the ancestry of John Floyd as follows in her DAR application (120035) in 1915:
"John Kendall Floyd, b. 1716; m. 1734, Ann Teackle;
John Floyd, Sr. b. 1737; m. 1757 Esther Floyd, his cousin;
John Floyd, b. 1758, d. 1836; m. Nancy Andrews."
She gave no documentation of this line of ancestry.

Leland Summers, in his "Newberry Historical and Genealogical," ties this Floyd family in with the Floyds of Georgia, and with the Floyd family of Virginia whose descendants went to Kentucky. No documentation is given.
