Thomas A. Fidel
January 20, 1950 - March 11, 2021
“What was necessary had been accomplished, and accomplished rightly.” This quote from Tolstoy sums up the life of Tom Fidel. He was a dutiful son, a hard worker and a loving husband. He believed in honoring his commitments and putting in a full day on the job. He was modest in his own ambitions, but willing to help others achieve their goals. He knew that he was richly blessed and felt a responsibility to share his good fortune with others.
Tom was born in Painesville, Ohio January 20th, 1950 on the cusp of Capricorn and Aquarius. He was the son of Anthony J. and Esther G. Fidel. He grew up in Unionville, Ohio and, after graduating from Ohio University, he returned to make his home there. Tom truly loved Unionville and delighted in telling the story of its founding by Colonel Alexander Harper in 1798. Besides his love of local history, Tom enjoyed cooking, a good game of chess, the movies of iconic director, John Ford, and anything to do with water or boats. Looking for a spirited argument? Tom was your man.
Tom died in the home he loved on March 11th, 2021 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Laura, cousins Linda Giles (Bill), Terry Gabor (Fran), David Gabor (Tammy),Karen Gabor, Tammy Fidel Gabor (David), Ann Whalley (Rick), Mary Sidley, Elizabeth Wayman, Ron Dale and Ben Dale, father-in-law W.M. Voss, brother-in-law Bill Voss (Jen), nieces and nephews. Finally, he is survived by faithful cats and foot-warmers, Lily and Rudy.
Tom will be laid to rest in the Alexander Harper Memorial Cemetery in Unionville on Wednesday, March 17th. A graveside service will be officiated by Reverend Debbie Muzik at 11AM. Tom was a long-time member and supporter of East End YMCA, 730 N. Lake St., Madison, OH 44057. Donations to that organization in his memory would be appreciated.
