NAPLES, Fla. -- Jack Clifford Basquin, 89, of Naples, Florida died Saturday morning, Sept. 13, 2014.

Jack was born in Cleveland on Nov. 7, 1924 to Gladys Vrooman Basquin and Clifford A. Basquin and was the third born of four children. He lived near Big Prairie on the family farm until 2010 when he made Naples, Fla. his permanent home. He graduated from Big Prairie High School, where he met his future wife, Betty Breneman.

He attended Ohio Wesleyan University and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He was called to duty from Ohio Wesleyan and served in the amphibious forces of the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II.

After returning home from the War, he married his high school sweetheart, Betty Breneman, in 1946. Jack began working in partnership with his father at Basquin Farms growing assorted vegetables. Eventually, the farm grew only potatoes. He served as president of the Ohio Vegetable and Potato Growers Association for two years. Realizing the need for improvements in harvesting equipment, Jack and brother-in-law, J. Clyde Breneman, formed the Basman Rubber Company which manufactured rubber coated chain for potato harvesters. The company went on to manufacture miscellaneous rubber products including golf ball centers, door stops, car mats, stair treads, etc. Jack also had ownership and management responsibilities in the Ponderosa Oil Company.

Jack was a member of several Masonic organizations including the Blue Lodge of Shreve, Al Koran Shrine Club of Cleveland, Royal Order of Jesters of Cleveland and the Wooster Shrine Club. He was a 50-year member of the American Legion Forest Post 67 of Shreve and the Eastern Star.

Jack served for 16 years on the school boards of Big Prairie and West Holmes school districts. He was a lifetime member of the Newkirk and Shreve United Methodist Churches and in later years attended North Naples Methodist Church.

Jack was an expert in finding the humor in life situations, always appreciated a funny story and was quick to tell one. He had many friends in all walks of life who will remember his infectious, identifiable laugh.
