Evelyn Loraine Geffert, 97, of Humboldt, Kansas, passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Windsor Place in Iola. She had been in failing health the past few years.

Evelyn was born August 14, 1919 in Arcadia, Kansas, the first of six children to Elzie Clyde and Ruby Elizabeth (McClain) Rourk. She enjoyed working on the farm with all sorts of farm animals. Her hobbies were gardening, canning, planting flowers and cooking. Her specialty was making fried chicken, which everyone loved. She was a people person who never met a stranger.

Evelyn was united in marriage to Francis Barnard Geffert on November 7, 1945. Evelyn's life as a wife and mother was cut short too soon as her only child, Mary was stillborn in 1946. Later, in 1949 her husband of four years, Francis, passed due to an accident while helping to move utility poles along the right-of-way in front of his family's property. Leaving Evelyn alone, the Geffert family asked her to stay with them. She took care of the elder Geffert parents, as well as all the Geffert siblings in their later years, which spanned nearly 70 years. Evelyn had a very giving and caring heart. She always put others before herself.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis; a stillborn daughter, Mary; two brothers, Raymond and Lawrence Rourk; and two sisters Dorothy Ellis and Pauline Daniels.

Leaving behind to cherish her memory is her brother Jim and wife, Donna Rourk of Iola, many nieces and nephews, long time friend Nina Lee Johnson of Elsmore, Kansas, and many other friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 PM, Monday, February 13, 2017 at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, Iola. Burial will follow in the Mt. Hope Cemetery, Humboldt, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 1:00 to 1:30 PM, prior to the service on Monday. Memorial contributions may be made to Kindred Hospice left in care of the funeral home. Condolences may be left at www.feuerbornfuneral.com.
