He enlisted in Co. B, 51st Massachusetts Infantry Regiment, on 30 Sep 1862, and he was promoted to 1st Lieutenant on 08 Oct 1862. He was mustered out on 25 Jan 1863 at New Berne, NC.

He and his brothers, Salem T. and Dr. Henry O. Adams, served together in Co. B, 51st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry.

26 Jun 1872 he married Fannie R Chase, b. Oct 1852 in MA, daughteer of Chauncy and Caroline M Chase. They had two children -- Winifred and Robert.

In October 1891 he received a pension for his service.
