The son of German-born Lawrence & Pennsylvania-born Lydia (Martin) Berger, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Hamilton Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Franklin County July 25, 1863, allegedly having run away from home to do so, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 1 as a private with Co. I in the six-month organization of the 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry (182nd Pennsylvania), and honorably discharged with his company February 22, 1864.
2. Enlisted at the stated age of nineteen in Harrisburg August 17, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day as a private with Co. G, 8th Pennsylvania Cavalry (89th Pennsylvania). Wounded in the side at the battle of Hatcher's Run sometime during February 5 - 7, 1865, he was hospitalized but returned to duty. While standing guard duty in North Carolina, he lost part of a foot in the explosion of a Confederate shell. He honorably discharged by general order to date June 17, 1865.

He married Mary B. Ackerman ca. 1866 in Chambersburg and fathered:
(1.) Anna Mary Berger (b. 08/??/65)
(2.) John A. Berger Jr. (b. @1867).
(3.) Salome Virginia "Jennie" Berger (b. 01/??/70), married Mahlon Heller or Hiller.
(4.) George John Berger (b. 01/15/78).

By 1878, he was living in Harrisburg where he was a member of Hartranft Post No. 58, G.A.R. Cause of his death is listed as "cerebral softening" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.
