She grew up in Lennoxville, Quebec, and upon graduation from high school, she attended Business College in Sherbrooke, Quebec. She worked in the office of Union Screen Plate, now CAE Industries, for 9 years. During her years in Lennoxville, she was a member of the United Church and held offices in their women’s groups, and Sunday school and youth groups. She was secretary for the Sherbrooke Hospital auxiliary and the Home & School Association.
Soon after their move to Ottawa, her husband, Keith, developed ALS and Elsie was his caregiver for 4 years until his death in 1981.
Her service to family, friends, and community by her baking, cooking, sewing and knitting will be long remembered.
She is survived by a son, a grandson, a great-granddaughter, a great-grandson, and several nephews and nieces in Quebec, Ontario, and the U.S.
She was predeceased by brothers, John Gilbey and Ernest W. Gilbey; and one sister, Nellie MacKay.
At a later date, her ashes will be interred in the Malvern Cemetery, Lennoxville, Quebec, her birthplace, alongside her husband Keith.
