Suggested edit: June 3, 1981, JEWETT MESSENGER - Thomas & Nancy (Meadows) Dezell came to Leon County, TX, between 1850 & 1860 from Humphreys County, Tennessee. The 1850 Census from Tennessee reflects the following children: Thomas C. 19 yrs old, Lettis 17 yrs old, John T. 15 yrs old, Zela Young 13 yrs old, Edbert M. 10 yrs old, Ira A. 8 yrs old, William B. 6 yrs old, & Ithiel 1 yr old. THOMAS COTRAN DEZELL, born 1832 in TN, enlisted Company E 1st Inf. Battalion Waul's Texas Legion May 4, 1862 at Centerville, TX. He became sick at Centerville with measles and remained until Oct. 1982. He reported sick in hospital at Vaiden, Miss. Nov-Dec. 1862. A number of Leon County men died in the hospital at Vaiden. Miss. Thomas Dezell was reported sick at hospital at Vicksburg, Miss. on Feb. 14, 1863. Reported sick in Nov. 1863. In March, 1864, he was reported sick on leave in Leon County. March 1864 he enlisted in Co. D of Timmons' Regt. Texas Inf. In July 1864 he was reported sick in hospital in Galveston since May 1864. Reported sick sick Aug. 10 & 20, 1864. April 1865 reported on furlough. Died Nov 27, 1867 in Leon Co., TX & is buried at Union Cemetery. JOHN TATE DEZELL born 1835 in TN, enlisted in Co. D Gould's Battalion at Centerville in the spring of 1862. He survived the Civil War & raised a family in Leon County, TX. Died July 29, 1910 & is buried in Centerville Cemetery. ZELA YOUNG DEZELL born 1838 in TN, enlisted July 11, 1861 at Centerville in the Leon Hunters Co. C 5th Regt. Texas Inf. He was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, PA, July 2, 1863. His remains were reported to have brought home by his brothers John T. & Ira A. Dezell and buried at Union Cemetery about 1875. EDBERT MEADOWS DEZELL born 1840 in TN, enlisted July 11, 1861 at Centerville in the Leon Hunters Co. C 5th Regt. Texas Inf. He was reported sick in hospital at Richmond, VA, Oct. 1861. Sick in hospital Nov 16, 1861. Jan., Feb. 26, & Apr. 27, 1862, wounded in Battle of Sharpsburg, MD, Sep. 17, 1862. Reported sick at Winchester Oct. 13, 1862. He died Dec. 4, 1862, of small pox while on leave at his home in Leon County & is buried at Union Cemetery. IRA ATHELBERT DEZELL born 1844 in TN, enlisted May 6, 1862 at Centerville, TX in Co. E 1st Inf. Battalion Waul's Texas Legion. He died July 7, 1933 in Jewett, TX, & is buried at the Jewett Cemetery. WILLIAM BARTLETT DEZELL born 1846 in TN, enlisted Aug. 15, 1862 at Centerville, TX, in the Co. E 1st Inf. Battalion Waul's Texas Legion. He became sick at Centerville with the measles and remained there until the end of Dec. 1862. He died Nov. 7, 1863 at Holly Springs, AR, en route to Mississippi. His body is reported to have been returned to Union Cemetery by his brother, Edbert M. Dezell in Nov. 1862. The 6 Dezell brothers at their entrance into the Confederate Army ranged in age from 16 years old to 30 years old. Each of the 6 brothers received Confederate Grave markers on their graves on May 23, 1981.
