Sgt. Howard Stevenson died in the line of duty at age 39, worked 20 years in Law Enforcement. Was named Ceres Police Officer of the year in 1999. He was ambushed at a Liquor Store by 19 yr. old Andreas Raya. Sgt. Stevenson and a few other Police Officers rushed to the scene. The first Officer was shot and wounded by the suspect. Sgt. Stevenson exited his Squad Car and fired off 8 shots at the suspect, but got shot himself. He was shot 3 times, in the torso and legs. The suspect then walked over and shot him twice in the head. Andreas Raya had used a semi-automatic rifle hidden under his rain poncho. He also was an AWOL Marine and was associated with gangs, also high on cocaine at the time. He ran into a nearby house, where he engaged more Police Officers in gunfire. He was shot and killed. Sgt. Stevenson was survived by his wife Kathy, two daughters Megan and Mikeala, and a son Bryce.He was 39 yrs young,with the Dept 20 yrs.A suspect armed with a semi-automatic rifle shot and killed this officer during a shootout.He was called,along with other officers to a liquor store with a suspicious male inside.The suspect shot the officer 3 times in the torso,legs before shooting him twice in the head.The suspect was killed 3 hours later in another shootout.Sgt.
