Jefferson City News-Tribune (MO) - October 25, 2013:

Mr. A. Duane Wheatley, age 92 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., died Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the Jefferson City Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Duane was born July 22, 1921, in Wray, Colo., the son of Arthur and Estelle Curtis Wheatley. He was married on October 16, 1955, in Lamoni, Iowa, to Hattie Lee Netherton.

Duane graduated from Graceland College in Lamoni, Iowa, and received a Master in Agriculture from the University of Missouri. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a Buck Sergeant in charge of heavy equipment for building airfields in the South Pacific. His niece, Sonia Harmon arranged for him to participate in an honor flight to Washington, D.C. on May 24, 2010.

A resident of the Jefferson City area for 43 years, Duane was employed as an Appraiser with District 5 of the Missouri Dept. of Transportation for 35 years, prior to his retirement in 1986.

He was a lifelong member and minister in the Community of Christ Church. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club and had perfect attendance for 50 years. He was a master gardener with the Bittersweet Garden Club. Duane was a past member of the Moberly Lions Club and a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Duane dedicated his retirement time to maintaining the building and grounds of the Community of Christ campground in Holts Summit.

Survivors include: his wife of 58 years, Hattie Wheatley; two step-children, Ken Nichols and his wife Deanna of New London, Mo. and Susan Davis and her husband Gene of Jefferson City, Mo.; two brothers, Bob Wheatley and his wife Phyllis of Denver, Colo. and Roland Wheatley of Independence, Mo.; one sister, Lois Glenn of Nebraska; six grandchildren, Bob Nichols and his wife Debbie, Brad Nichols and his wife Sarah, Matt Nichols and his wife Wendy, Jeff Davis, Krista Davis, and Kirk Davis and his wife Angie; 16 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren; two nieces, Sonia Harmon and her husband Jim and Sheryl Hutchens and her husband Victor; and a great-niece and nephew, Phoebe and Nathan. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Mark D. Wheatley on May 25, 2013; one brother, Curtis Wheatley in 2003; and two sisters, Lorraine Hammer in 2012 and Lavonne Leggett in 2004.

Visitation will be at the Community of Christ Church from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, October 26, 2013, at the Community of Christ Church, 1620 Vieth Dr., Jefferson City, Mo. with Elder Jerry Henry officiating. Interment will be conducted at Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Community of Christ Church, 1620 Vieth Dr., Jefferson City, MO 65109.
