James Peter Banich

beloved son of James and Frances Banich, passed away Friday, September 12. Jim was known for his giving heart and willingness to help anyone in need. After graduating from UCLA he worked in insurance but found his true calling in teaching high school math and coaching at Arvada and Arvada West high schools. His own high school athletics at Arvada brought him state records in the shot put and discus, which were only recently broken. This earned Jim a full scholarship to UCLA where he was voted 1987 PAC 8 track and field athlete of the year. He finished 7th in the 1988 Olympic Trials in the shot put, wrapping up his athletic career. These experiences, along with Jim's generous heart, intelligence, goofy sense of humor and his relationship with God made him a wonderful teacher and coach, and over the years he touched the lives of many people. He will be forever loved by those who knew him, and his loss will always be deeply felt.

Jim is survived by his wife Tammy; sons Mitch and Mike and daughter Jordan; his mother Frances; his sister Maryanne; his brother Howard and nephew James.

A memorial service to celebrate Jim's life will be held at Crossroads Church at 9725 West 50th Avenue in Wheat Ridge this Wednesday, September 17 starting at 1 p.m., and a reception will follow at Arvada West High School at 11595 Allendale Drive at 3 p.m.

Jim's remains will be interned with his father's at Arvada Cemetery in a private ceremony.
