Hester was the only child born to Robert Arthur Hartman and Sarah Elizabeth Shugars. She married Stanley Heckman on June 25, 1930 in Nescopeck. They had 3 sons.
Hester served as the secretary of the girl's department of the YMCA in Berwick. She was an active member of Bethany United Methodist Church in Berwick where she was active in many of the organizations of the church and taught Sunday School classes for more than 30 years. She was a member of the Berwick Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star.
She died at Geisinger Medical Center after battling cancer for a year. She was 64 at the time of her death.
