Anna Dorothea Goeritz (Göritz) was born abt 1824 in Prussia, Germany. She married Karl Heinrich Engel (d before 1885 in Prussia) and had nine children, three of whom immigrated to the USA, Carl Heinrich (b Jan. 10, 1848), Heinrich Gustav (b Oct. 1, 1850) and Frederick Wilhelm Gustav (b Oct 11, 1862). One son, August died of appendicitis at about age 9, and five additional children died in infancy, all in Prussia.
Anna's son Carl Heinrich, his wife Auguste and three children where the first to immigrate to the USA on the steamship Herder arriving in New York on Mar. 16, 1881. Anna Dorothea (age 61) and her youngest son Frederick Wilhelm Gustav (age 22) left Hamburg, Germany on the steamship Westphalia on Feb. 11, 1885, arriving in New York on Feb 25, 1885. Anna and Frederich immediately traveled to Brainard Twp, Brown County, SD where they homesteaded. Anna homsteaded SE10-126-62-W5M (160 acres) and Frederick homesteaded NE10-126-62-W5M (160 acres). Anna lived in Brainard Twp for 12 years. Anna’s son, Heinrich Gustav, his wife Anna Marie Louise Karoline née Köte and three sons left Hamburg, Germany on the steamship Australia on Jan 9, 1889, arriving in New York on Jan. 28, 1889.
Anna, age 73, passed away on July 6, 1897 after a very short illness and was interred in Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church (NE31 Twp126-Rge61-W5M). On Sept. 14, 1983, Anna D Engel and 8 other deceased people were disinterred from Evangelical Lutheran Zion Church and reburied in a mass grave in St Johns Lutheran Cemetery, Brown County, SD, USA.
