He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Knox College in 1930, a Master of Science degree from the University of Illinois in 1931, a doctorate degree from Illinois in 1934, and a doctor of law degree from DePaul College of Law in 1939.
He was promoted from second lieutenant to lieutenant colonel in the chemical warfare service of the U.S. Army.
Dr. Bull joined Johnson and Johnson in 1946 as director of the patent division of the law department. Prior to that he was a patent agent for the DuPont Company from 1934 to 1937, and from 1937 to 1941 he was a patent attorney with the firm Ames, Thiess Olson and Mecklenburgher (later changed to Pendleton, Newman, Sibold and Williams).
He was married on May 20, 1943 to Miss Rebecca M. Jones of Toronto, Canada. They had two children, David Benton and Cynthia A. Bull, and two grandchildren.
Benton was a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and Phi Delta Theta; was on the board of directors of the Princeton YMCA and a member of Trinity Episcopal Church.
Benton was a grandson of Allena (Ford) and Capt. Benjamin Franklin Williams of Wabash, Indiana; and a great-grandson of Dr. James and America (Holton) Ford, also of Wabash.
