Samuel Barrette, a prominent citizen of the town of Eastman, passed away at his home on the farm, Monday noon, March 12, 1934, after an illness of twelve days, at the age of 85 years, 1 month and 4 days.

Samuel's ancestors were connected with the history of Prairie du Chien and the vicinity. Peter Barrette Sr., his grandfather, ran the first ferry boat across the Wisconsin River in 1835 and his grandfather and grandmother Powers donated the land for St. Gabriel's church and cemetery.

Samuel Barrette, oldest son of Louis and Caroline (Powers) Barrette was born February 8, 1849 at Prairie du Chien. His four brothers and four sisters all preceded him in death.

On May 30, 1883, he was united in marriage to Frances Adeline Hertzog at St. Gabriel's church. This union was blessed with nine children.

The first four years of their married life were spent on the Barrette farm in Bridgeport and from there they moved to Minneapolis MN., where Samuel managed a meat market for three years. In 1890, they moved to the Hertzog homestead where he passed the remaining years of his life.

He is survived by his wife and his children; John Henry, Roland, Alexander, Joseph, Louis, Fred and Arthur Barrette, Caroline (Merle) Grimesey, Marie (Zowel) Prew and twelve grandchildren.
