On May 30, 1860, at age 16, John enlisted as a PVT in Company F, 2nd NC Infantry Battalion in Cumberland County, NC. He survived the Civil War and returned home to the Neills Creek area of Harnett County, NC and began farming.
On March 9 1871, at age 23, in Harnett County, he married Mary 'Mollie' Shaw Stewart, daughter of Neill Shaw Stewart (1820-1889) and wife Hannah Ann Eliza Armstrong (1819-1903).
In 1876, at age 29, John was appointed Sheriff of Harnett County, a position he held for many years.
John died on March 6, 1910 at age 62 of pneumonia. He is buried in the Old Stewart Family Cemetery located on private property, formerly owned by the Stewart family, at 612 SR 1769, Erwin, Harnett, NC. The cemetery is located in the middle of a horse paddock which originally was an open field.
