MRS. STEPHEN BATES OF EAST WAREHAM
Lucinda Nye Bates, wife of Stephen Bates of East Wareham, born in Pocasset, Mass., in August 1845, the daughter of Resolva A. Burgess of Brewster and Susan H. (Eldredge) of Harwich, died at her home on March 25 of pneumonia and heart failure, age 65 years, 6 months. Death came very unexpectedly and was a bitter blow to her family and friends.

The deceased had lived in the village of East Wareham for over forty years, and besides her husband, leaves Stephen H. Bates of Osterville, Town Clerk Charles L. Bates of East Wareham, Lizzie E. Fernald of Onset, L. Mabel Bates, for many years a teacher in the public schools of Wareham and Chelsea, and Edith Mayo of East Wareham, eight grandchildren and a wide circle of friends and relatives to mourn her loss. Two of the family of nine children died young, George E., at the age of ten and a daughter in infancy.

Mrs. Bates was a kind neighbor, a faithful wife, conscientious and kindhearted, loving and always ready with a mother's love to sacrifice her own comforts for the benefit of her children. Above all, she possessed a Christian spirit and directed her children in right paths. She will be missed for:

"Tis hard to part when friends are dear,
Perhaps 'twill cost a sigh, or tear,
Then steal away: give little warning,
Choose thine own time.
Say not 'Good night',
But in some brighter clime,
Bid me 'Good morning'.

Funeral services were held in the East Wareham Church on Tuesday at 1 o'clock. The sermon was preached by Rev. George R. Locke and the East Wareham quartette, composed of Messrs. Eugene C. Ellis, J. Max Savary, Mrs. Laura L. Peck and Mrs. Jennie J. Whittemore, rendered beautiful selections of song.

Interment was at the Agawam cemetery.
