Born in Scranton, son of the late Walter K. and Mary Trebilcock Applegate, he was a member of Hickory Street Presbyterian Church and a graduate of Scranton Technical High School, class of 1952. He served with the Army from 1954 to 1956. He was active with the Boy Scouts of America, the Order of the Arrow, he served on the executive committee of the North East Region of the Boy Scouts, was a board member of the NEPA EMS Council and was a member of the American Legion, Edward J. Poch Post 948, the South Scranton Lions Club, retired Fire Fighters Association and the International Association of Fire Fighter Local 60. In May of 1963, he was appointed to the Scranton Fire Department, and at the time of his retirement in December of 2001 he proudly held the rank of superintendent.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him. Some of his most enjoyable times were spending summers at the lake with his family.
The family would like to thank the staff at Commonwealth Dialysis and the staff at the Geisinger Community Medical Center, Eighth floor, ICU and the many physicians, who compassionately took care of Harvey through the years.
He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Miller Bean Funeral Home Inc., 436 Cedar Ave., Scranton, with services by the Rev. Harrison Putnam, pastor of Trinity United Church of Christ. Interment will follow at Abington Hills Cemetery, South Abington Twp.
