Dorothy Aileen (Burns) Stranger, 87, passed away peacefully on Sept. 17, 2014, in Torrance, Calif., where she called her home for almost 50 years.
-Dorothy was born, along with her beloved twin brother Donald, on Dec. 11, 1926, in Thief River Falls, Minn. She was the daughter of Francis John Burns and Edna Margaret Ryff Burns. She spent her youth growing up in Hawley, Minn. where the family moved in 1927. She later received a teaching degree from Moorhead State Teachers College.
-While teaching school in Kellogg, Idaho, Dorothy met Carl Robert "Bob" Stranger and they were married on Aug. 12, 1951, in Hawley, Minn. For several years, Dorothy set aside her teaching career and devoted her life to raising their four children. During that span of less than 10 years the family of six lived in Tonasket, Wash., Lewiston, Idaho, San Diego, Calif., and Redondo Beach, Calif.
-Dorothy returned to teaching in 1965 in Torrance, Calif., and from that time on she remained a highly respected teacher in the South Bay area until her retirement from Los Angeles Unified School District in 2001.
-Being a devout patriot, Dorothy was a proud supporter of veterans as well as numerous other charities. Among those foundations were charities that promoted diabetic research and those that provided for the well being of underprivileged children.
-Dorothy led an active life that included travel, genealogy research, and visiting with family and friends. She was particularly proud of serving as a volunteer for the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, and was a passionate fan of the Los Angeles Lakers.
-Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, on July 30, 1995; her oldest son, Ken; one sister and three brothers. She is survived by daughter Jill of Torrance, Calif., and sons Scott (Linda) and Brian (Kathy) both of Dalton Gardens, Idaho; she was the proud grandmother of Andrea Stranger, Bill and Patty (Stranger) Davenport, Amy Stranger, and Carl (Joanna) Stranger; and great-grandmother of Jenna and Caleb Davenport.
-All of Dorothy's immediate and extended family have been blessed by her love and support throughout their lifetimes.
-A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 25, at the Community United Methodist Church, 1470 W. Hanley Ave., in Coeur d'Alene. In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Children's Village at 1350 W. Hanley Ave., Coeur d'Alene, ID 83815.
