Mary grew up at Charter Oak, Iowa. Her high school sweetheart was Leonard Pithan. He was three years older than she, so he was out of school and went off to the military. Their paths parted. Mary met and married Dave Christensen from Elkader, Iowa.

Dave and Mary had three children: Lisa Ann (who married Andrew J. Cook in Omaha), Lori Jo (who married and later divorced Jerry Fillbach), and Craig David (who married and later divorced Olivia Janis and Jody Denton).

Mary became a registered nurse. She worked at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, Nebraska for many years. In partial retirement she was a private nurse.

She was an avid Family Tree hobbyist. And she doted lovingly over her grandchildren, all of whom live in Omaha.

David died of cancer in 1997.

Ten years later Mary attended a high school reunion in Charter Oak where she happened upon her old high school sweetheart, widower Leonard Henry Pithan! They immediately began seeing each other. It was love at second sight. It took a long time for Leonard to talk Mary into marriage; she was in love, but took a long time to decide to marry. But finally in June 2013 they married at Mary's church, Presbyterian Church of the Master in Omaha. It was a joyous blessing for both of them.

In mid-2014 Mary's diabetes worsened. She was hospitalized for a long time, trying to get a bad foot to heal. It finally had to be amputated. She got worse, and finally after a hard-fought battle, died.

She was survived by husband, Leonard Pithan; her children (all of Omaha), stepchildren, Patty G. McCall and family; Scott T. Pithan and family; grandchildren, Matthew David (Jessica) Cook, Christopher Thomas Cook, Kira Ann Cook, Carli Jo Fillbach, Alec Jerry Fillbach, Alyssa Nicole Fillbach, and Paige Riley Christensen (all of Omaha); sister, Edna "Pooty" Jones (Bill Guffy); and brother, Richard (Christine) Kluver.

Her funeral service was at Presbyterian Church of the Master in Omaha.
