He was born on June 2, 1951 in Bloomington, Illinois, a son to Eugene A. and Helen O. Geary Huchel. He married Cynthia Sue Naumann on Aug. 26, 1972 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Peru, Illinois. She survives.
He is also survived by his brother, Joseph Huchel; sister, Lynne Oakes; two nephews, Ryan Oakes and Jonathan Oakes; niece, Kristen Oakes and his sister-in-law, Linda Larkin and brother-in-law, Mike Larkin and their children, Scott (Gina) Larkin and Tracy Larkin.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, David W. Oakes.
He graduated from Moore Township High School in Farmer City in 1969, and Illinois State University with a bachelor of science in education in 1973 and a master's of science in 1976 in the field of industrial technology. He also completed courses in computer science and received a certificate in educational administration at ISU.
He taught industrial arts and building trades in Streator, Wenona and Minonk, and retired in 2008 as a faculty associate and technology support person at Thomas Metcalf School at Illinois State University, having taught children in elementary through high school for 36 years.
