Robert Gilbert Plaxico, affectionately known as Pawpaw, held a place in my heart as though we were blood relatives. His journey through life was marked by valor and compassion.

His service in World War II, notably in the Pacific Theatre and the harrowing Battle of the Bulge, exemplified his bravery. Despite enduring severe frostbite during the latter, he fulfilled his duties with unwavering resolve.

In 1948, he married my grandmother following the loss of her husband during WWII in 1944. Embracing her three children as his own, he assumed the role of a devoted father with grace and love.

Pawpaw's dedication to his family knew no bounds. As a carpenter by trade, he toiled tirelessly to provide, taking on any odd job that came his way. His resilience ensured that his loved ones never went without food or shelter.

Above all, his love for my grandmother was unparalleled. Their bond was a testament to enduring affection, characterized by tender gestures and unwavering devotion. He cared for her selflessly, prioritizing her well-being over his own until her passing in 2007.

Their love story remains a beacon of hope and inspiration—a testament to the profound impact of true companionship.

Rest in Peace, Pawpaw.

With love,

David
