IN MEMORIAM,

William B. Chamberlin, Jr., 86, of Plainville, passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, September 18, 2014.

Born in Bristol on January 19, 1928, he was one of five children to the late William and Dorothy (Osgood) Chamberlin.

Raised in Plainville, he was a 1945 graduate of Plainville High School. Bill went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, receiving an honorable discharge in 1947.

He married Alice "Dolly" (Eaton) in 1949, with whom he shared 65 years of marriage and raised two devoted daughters.
'
He retired from Olson Brothers, Inc. in 1993, and was appointed Deputy Fire Marshal in 1966, serving the Town of Plainville as Fire Marshal from 1979 until his retirement in 2000. Bill has a history with the Bailey family spanning over 60 years and four generations, from working at the funeral home at the age of 15 and assisting with the tragic circus fire in Hartford, to returning as a funeral assistant until his retirement in 2009.

Bill volunteered for the Plainville Fire Department from 1961-1993, serving in various capacities, including 1st Lieutenant, Captain, 2nd Assistant Chief and 1st Assistant Chief from 1975-1979 and was instrumental in starting the first annual Hot Air Balloon Festival 30 years ago in honor of the department's 100th anniversary.

He was a member and Past Master of the Frederick-Franklin Lodge of Masons, and was presented with the Paul Harris Award for his many contributions to the Plainville Rotary Club.

In addition to his wife, Dolly, he leaves his daughters, Pamela and Sande of Plainville, his brother, Arthur, and sisters, Ruth Kershner and Dot Smith, all of Texas; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services in celebration of Bill's life will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bailey Funeral Home, 48 Broad St, Plainville. Committal services will follow at West Cemetery.

Family and friends may gather on Monday evening, from 5-8 p.m. at the funeral home, with a Masonic Service to be held at 7:30. Those who wish may remember Bill with donations to the Plainville Fire Company Scholarship Fund, 177 West Main St, or the Plainville Community Fund, PO Box 156, Plainville.
