Deceased Name: R.L. RATHBONE
HAMPTON - R.L. Rathbone, 77, soldier of the cross and shepherd of his family,went to be with the Lord on Oct. 28, 1998. Born on Feb. 1, 1921, in Clyde, N.C.,he resided in Hampton for over 40 years.

After his rebirth to Christ in 1950, he was faithful in service to the Lord in several area churches and ministries. He was a charter member of First Calvary Baptist Church in Hampton, where he served as a deacon, usher and trustee.

Awaiting our reunion in heaven with him are his wife of 53 years, Stella Mae Rathbone; five sons, including James Harold Rathbone, and his wife, Anne, of Poquoson, Phillip Michael Rathbone and Lydia Zartman of Santa Barbara, Calif., Roger Keith Rathbone, and his wife, Catherine, of Montpelier, David Allen Rathbone, and his wife, Carla, of Seneca, S.C., Jeffrey Wayne Rathbone, and his wife, Kim, of Hampton; his sister, Genevieve Ledford of Clyde, N.C.; his nephew, Eugene Taylor of Clyde, N.C.; and many members of his extended families and friends.

Mr. R.L. Rathbone was a distinguished veteran of World War II. He received a battlefield commission of lieutenant during his active duty. He received the Good Conduct Medal, American Defense Service Medal with one bronze service star, American Theater Campaign Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with one bronze service star and the Distinguished Unit Badge as a member of ''Merrill's Marauders.''
Mr. Rathbone was awarded posthumously Congressional Gold Medal for his service with Merrill's Marauder's during WW II

Mr. R.L. Rathbone retired from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., where he worked as an electrician in Department X31.

A funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, at First Calvary Baptist Church by the Rev. Mark D. Boyd. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Friday at R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made in Mr. Rathbone's name to First Calvary Baptist Church, 9 Silver Isles Blvd., Hampton, Va. 23664.

Our family extends our deepest appreciation to all the staff at Sentara Hampton General Hospital CCU unit, friends and family who enabled a transition of dignity and peace.
