"Cohocton, Nov. 3 – The death last week of James H. Totten, which followed a decline of several months duration, removed a well known resident of the north part of Steuben county for most of his life of nearly 78 years. Mr. Totten was a veteran of the Civil War, having been a member of Company I of the 161st Regiment N.Y.S. Volunteer Infantry, most of which was raised in this county and several of the former members reside in Cohocton. After the war he was successfully engaged in farming until failing health compelled his retirement when he moved to Wayland. He was an official member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and is survived by his wife, one son, Theodore Totten of Rochester, and two daughters, Miss Syrena Totten at home and Mrs. William Van Tassal of Wayland."
