Mass of Christian Burial will be Monday, March 20, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Redfield, S.D. Father William Osborn will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Redfield, S.D. Visitation will be Sunday from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. on Sunday at Thelen Funeral Home.
Frances was born on May 3, 1918, at St. Bernard, Neb., to Mathew and Pauline (Drieferst) Schmitz. She attended school until marrying Donavon Whitley in Naper, Neb., at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. Frances and Donavon farmed for many years until moving to Redfield to work at the South Dakota Developmental Center in Redfield. After Frances retired from the South Dakota Developmental Center-Redfield, she provided day care for many children for the next 20 years.
Frances enjoyed baking, sewing, gardening, flowers, praying the rosary and she especially enjoyed her family along with her frequent home remodeling projects.
She was a member of the St. Bernard's Catholic Church and the Altar Society.
She is survived by her eight children: Ron (Bev) Whitley of Redfield, S.D.; Gary (Helen) Whitley of Redfield, S.D.; Tom (Alice) Whitley of Frankfort, S.D.; Donna (Terry) Thomas of Redfield, S.D.; Connie Whitley of Redfield, S.D.; Joe (Jane) Whitley of Denver, Colo.; Susan (Dallas) Olson of Frankfort, S.D. and Rick (Jane) Whitley of Tulare, S.D.; and 27 grand children, 31 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two brothers: Harold (Irma) Schmitz of Shawnee, Kan., and Gerold (Sara) Schmitz of Butte, Neb.; and three sisters: Regina Zietner of Eugene, Ore.; Margaret Honkey of Butte, Neb., and Mary (Ray) Fuhrer of Naper, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966, her parents and two brothers and two sisters.
