Allen enlisted in the U.S. Army Sept. 8, 1943 during World War II. He served in the 187th Engineer Combat Battalion and in October of 1944 was deployed to Europe. He received additional training in England, then went to Northern France, where he served as a part of General Patton's Third Army. Allen was killed on February 22, 1945. As they were working near a mill, some mines exploded killing four American Soldiers.

A Memorial Plaque honoring these soldiers was placed at the mill site in September 1996 by the Germans in memory of the release of two German prisoners by the American Military. The four Soldiers were temporarily buried in an American Military Cemetery in Margraten, Netherlands prior to being sent home to the US.
