Son of Patrocius Jacob Friedrich August Hirsch and Caroline Brenmehl.

Up until the age of sixteen he was tutored by the military in Christina/Oslo, as his father was a military doctor.

He decided maybe he would like a career at sea, but after two years decided it wasn't to his liking. He returned to home and went to the local university for three years and decided he wanted to to to America, which he did in 1863.

It didn't take him long to become involved with his new country and in Chicago enlisted in Co. D. 89th Illinois Volunteer Infantry as a private. He was transferred as corporal into the 59th Illinois Infantry, where he remained until he mustered out on 2 August 1865.

After the war he had made the decision that he wished to become a medical doctor, so enlisted in Rudd Medical College, where he graduated with honors in 1868.

Before he finished his education, he married Camilla Thrane in 1867. She was the daughter of Marcus Moller Thrane, the one time labor activist in Norway.

Upon receiving his medical degree the Hirsch's move many times. First to Dane County, Wisconsin for a period of 9 years, then to Baldwin where they resided for a year. Next found them in Zumbaorta, Minnesota for two years, then off to Lake Mills, Iowa for a couple of years. From there they went to Blue Earth City, Minnesota for a stint of 3 years.

While practicing medicine in Blue Earth City, he was a co-owner in a pharmacy. However, tragedy struck with their being a fire, which he lost of his medical equipment and books.

For the next three years he traveled around the state of North Dakota, finally to Black River Falls, Wisconsin for a period of 4 years.

His last home would be New Ulm where he would live out the remainder of his life.
