The middle son of James F. Athearn and Lydia Ramsdell Starbuck, James was educated in Boston and sailed the world before settling down in Southern California, where he originally raised sheep. He also owned and edited newspapers, was an attorney, head of the school board, and Justice of the Peace. He was one of the first two initiates of the Anaheim Masonic Lodge, and became Master of the lodge in 1876, and also a member of the board of Anaheim Cemetery. This was sadly ironic, since his wife died the following year, leaving him with two sons and two step-daughters. Frederic's last occupation was listed as "retail liquor" in Santa Ana. He died of consumption, as had his wife three years earlier, and was buried next to her. Cemetery records indicate that at some unknown time, he was disinterred and "sent to Los Angeles," but even his only surviving son did not know this. His FINAL final resting place remains unknown.
