Major General Erich Abberger fought in World War I. By the end of the war, he was an Oberleutnant and was a recipient of the Wound Badge in Black. By the time of the Second World War, he was Director of Officer Courses at the Pioneer school. During the war, he was promoted to Generalmajor der Pioniere, Army Pioneer Officer of the 5th Army.
